A baby rescued from her dying mother's womb after an Israeli air strike in southern Gaza has died, the BBC has learned.

Days old and desperately thin, Baby Malak did not even have a name when she was taken to a hospital in Gaza City, where she died on Wednesday (April 11, 2024).

Her death brings to at least 45 the number of people killed in the Israeli air strike on the Rafah refugee camp on Sunday (April 8, 2024).

The strike also killed Malak's mother, who was pregnant with twins. The other twin, a boy, was also killed.

The Israeli military said it had targeted a Hamas militant in the strike, but witnesses said the missile hit a civilian home.

Malak's death is a reminder of the human cost of the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Since 2007, the Israeli military has imposed a blockade on the territory, which has caused severe shortages of food, medicine, and other essential supplies.

The blockade has also made it difficult for Gaza's residents to travel, including for medical care. As a result, many Gazans have died from preventable diseases or injuries.

Malak's death is a tragedy, but it is also a reminder of the urgent need to end the blockade on Gaza and to bring peace to the region.
